Jen's Playlist: Remember

Music is not necessarily complicated, but I feel that if we listen to it for a reason and in a way that isn't mindless, it is. It's complicated because it mirrors and speaks to and even exasperates the way we feel, and feelings can be messy. Music is emotional. It's personal, remedial.

In my case, the music that I listen to changes with me and with the ways that I'm changing. It changes with the mood that I'm in and with the passing of each year. That's probably why I have a gazillion playlists and a headache-inducing take on the philosophy of music...

Anyways, I've decided to dedicate this playlist to remembering the summer I first came off my long break from music. Though it was five years ago, these songs will forever be special. They got through to me and showed me that it's okay to feel music again during a time when I was afraid to open my heart. I learned to accept bittersweet.

It's funny because this playlist mostly features love songs (although most songs are about love anyways) that I can't relate to, but somehow I still understand the emotions and the heartbreak in them. They're impactive songs, and they impacted me.

Maybe they'll mean something to you, too.
